Why Tax People Who Makes Less Than $20,000 Year? (BC)

This posts is about the tax law in BC, not anywhere else.

Dr. Keith Martin stated that he wants to eliminate taxes for people who make less than $20G a year. Because of the massive boom BC has received from developers, property, and population over the years, taxes are higher than ever.

A story I read the other day while eating lunch made me think “Hey, this isn’t a bad idea.” The article came from a local girl here in Victoria, about her struggle. I’ll keep it short, but basically the girl has her own business (full time) plus another part time job on the side. Since she lives on her own in this expensive city we call Victoria (1 bedrom, 1 bath, small living room with a kitchen in it, roughly 800sq. feet is $800/month) she only claimed taxes on her part time job. The article discussed how her rent, plus food, and bills made it impossible for her to pay taxes on both jobs, and the tax percentage the government wants. “If I paid the government what they wanted from me, I’d be the girl you see on the sidewalk pushing a cart full of cans.”

She hasn’t filed any taxes from her own business, which she founded in 1997. Now keep in mind it’s not like the business is booming and she has other employees. It’s just her, and her ideas. And just that full time job alone can’t pay her bills, hense the part time (I believe she said she worked in a chocolate kiosk at the mall or something.)

Four days ago she received a letter from the government that requested immediate payment of back taxes for 8 years, approximately $32,697. This girl makes anywhere from 12-17G a year, net. Not taxes, that’s net. So paying taxes ontop of that, living alone, bills etc. would make it impossible for her.

In short, I believe this 20 year old girl has a court date for sentencing or something in a couple of months. Basically she is being sent to jail for trying to stay alive in Victoria.
